Substance Abuse Counselling

“Sobriety goes beyond abstaining from substances—it’s about building a new life that sustains it.”

A substance use disorder is a medical condition that leads to significant impairments in health, social functioning, and an individual’s ability to control their use of substances.

In simple terms, substance abuse refers to the harmful use of any substance for mood-altering purposes. “Substances” can include alcohol and other drugs (whether legal or illegal) as well as some products that aren’t classified as drugs. Abuse occurs when a substance is used in a way that is not intended or recommended, or when it is consumed in amounts greater than prescribed.

Each year, millions of people lose their lives due to substance abuse.

When to Seek Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance use escalates to substance abuse when repeated use causes significant impairment in areas such as:

  • Disabilities
  • Failure to meet responsibilities
  • Health problems
  • Loss of control
  • Risky behaviors
  • Social issues

If you identify with at least three of these factors, your substance use may have reached the level of abuse, and it’s important to seek help.

For individuals with mild to moderate substance use disorders, treatment through general healthcare may be sufficient. However, those with severe substance use disorders (addiction) may require specialized care.
